Mumbai's dubbawala is a big success story. They have been subject of numerous documentaries, case studies, media coverage worldwide, got invited to Prince Charles and Camilla's wedding and have lectured students at B Schools. They have a wikipedia entry too.
Recently these guys have gone online with a web site - www.mydabbawala.com. The site is not that sophisticated as yet, but a great step forward nonetheless. You can apply dabba online. Though this service at present is limited to sending a mail, they are planning to launch a software application for order booking. They are also available on mobile phones - you can also book a dabba by sending a SMS message. Besides, a few other interesting products are listed in the website - VCD, calendar, T Shirt, Mug !! Wonder what a hungry sole will do with them.
In this hugely efficient model, dabbawalas carries food prepared by housewives in an aluminum dabba to the office/workplace of their husband. With the increase in nuclear families wherein both husband and wife works or in case of singles migrated to cities for job/study this distribution model can also be used by housewives or small businesses to provide food on commercial basis.
Wonder, why they are not starting the same service in other cities of the country, especially Bangalore. I too want to enjoy fresh and hot homemade lunch sitting in my office at Electronic City !
